Two Work Bees Scheduled (April 6th & April 7th)  |

     Next Thursday April 6th the Grand Traverse Conservation District is conducting a work bee at Boardman Pond on the Natural Education Reserve to collect and salvage willow cuttings before the removal of Boardman Dam commences.  The willow collection area is in the Boardman bottomlands that will be impacted by dam removal activities.  The following day (Friday April 7th) we will be planting the cuttings along the river at the Brown Bridge Quiet Area. 

   Collecting willow cuttings in the Boardman bottomlands will simply entail using loppers and hand pruners, then bundling the livestakes with twine or straps, and then either walking them out about a half mile or canoeing them across the river to a staged truck and trailer. We plan to shuttle the bundles across the river using a canoe. A good portion of the willow cuttings can be collected on dry ground, but we'll be needing some folks to have muck boots or hip boots to collect a few in standing water and to help load and unload the canoe if needed. Planting the cuttings on Friday will definitely require waders to plant the along the edge of the Boardman River at the Brown Bridge Quiet Area. Both days will be full work days, but volunteers are welcome to participate as long as you'd like on either days.
